May 21, 2010 at TAF at 9:30am

Jessica will be leading a discussion on keeping our looms and other tools in good working order.  Bring any ideas and experiences you have had.  Also, if you have tools that aren't commonly used, but you like, please bring them so others can learn about them.

As usual, our great show and tell, and let Dorothy know if you want a specific library book.

April 16, 2010 at TAF at 9:30am

Ellen has graciously invited us to her home to see her Harrisville loom, designed by Peter Collingwood, including shaft switching. She also will show us her slides of when she took a course from Jason, and the Collingwood home and studio.

There will be time for show and tell, so bring all your goodies.

Ellen has also invited us to stay for a pitch-in lunch. She will furnish the greens for a salad and drinks. We are to bring the rest of the salad fixings.

This should be a very interesting meeting! If you need instructions to get to her house, ask Dorothy.
Anyone need any library books?

March 19, 2010 at TAF at 9:30am

A little known method of making rag rugs has been popularized by Bobbie Irwin, who has just come out with her second book on twining. At this meeting, we’ll have a very short program about twining, with a chance to try it. Please bring whatever examples you may have.

Our favorite part of the meeting is usually show and tell. These don’t need to be newly woven, just something interesting. Hopefully, everyone will have something to share.

Be sure to check out the library list (click at the left) and let Dorothy know of any books you would like to have brought to the meeting.

February 19, 2010 at TAF at 9:30am

This month we’re going to have a weave-in. We’ll each bring something easy to transport to work on. We can be weaving while we talk. So our program will be seeing what the others are working on. We can learn a lot from seeing the in-process, as well as the finished project.

Some ideas: table loom, inkle loom, card weaving, kumihimo, tying fringes, winding a warp, finger weaving, etc.  We will not have another program for that meeting, just show and tell, and sitting around weaving.  This way we can get to see others "in motion" for a change.

Jessica’s blog is very interesting. See it at
www.fiber-fever.blogspot.com

Show and tell, of course. Email me for library books. It should be a fun day.

January 15, 2010 at TAF at 9:30am

To get us moving in this new year, please bring a woven item or 2 that you are proud of, no matter when you made it. Also, bring an idea or item that is giving you trouble.

The prouds, so we all realize what we are capable of, and the problems, to get us all thinking. This is the time to “ask the experts,” the experts being us all.

Also bring show and tell, and lots of enthusiasm. Let me know about library books.

November 20, 2009 at TAF at 9:30am

This is our last meeting of 2009, and we have several interesting items to talk about.

First, this is our third annual towel exchange. Anyone who wants to participate can bring one or two towels or scarves, and leave with one or two towels or scarves, after a drawing. Be sure to mark your towel or scarf with your name and weaving info. Please don't stay away from the meeting because you choose not to participate; we have lots of other fun things going on.

Jessica has asked us to talk about our favorite way of warping with more than one color. This will not be a contest between front warpers and back warpers, but a way of getting new ideas from others.

With the (almost) end of one year and the start of another, here are 2 more ideas. First, bring woven items that you have made in the past for Christmas decorations. Maybe others can get some ideas. Second, for the new year, be thinking of what you would like to learn in 2010.

And of course, bring all your show and tell. Let Dorothy know of any library books you want. Just click on "Library" on the left side of this page.

To make it a little special, we voted to have lunch together, in our meeting room, after the meeting. If you haven't already, let Ryoko know what you intend to bring.

October 16 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

The Feast of the Hunter's Moon is coming up on October 10 and 11. Thanks to Jan and others we have had a great weaving booth there for many, many years.

Our meeting on the 16th will be back at TAF.

This month Ryoko will show us the difference between making kumihimo (braid) on a small card, and on a marudai (braid stand). We'll each get to make a small sample. Several months ago a friend of Sue B bought a marudai at a garage sale, and sold it to us with several books and VCR tape, for our library.

Be sure to bring show and tell, including any projects from last month's workshop. Also, be ready to tell any interesting stories from the Feast.

Let Dorothy know which library books you would like to borrow.

September 18 workshop

Demonstrating weaving as recycling, this meeting (hands-on workshop) will be open to the public, at the Tippecanoe Public Library, 627 South St., Lafayette, from 10 to 2. (Use south entrance, right off parking lot.)

We will start our meeting at the usual 9:30, getting organized, with our show and tell throughout the day.

With showing recycling as our object, we will have looms already warped, with weft to be anything "green" such as plastic bags, rags, etc. We can make bags to reuse at grocery stores, purses, or whatever.

In warping for a bag that is to be reused, be sure to have a strong warp (carpet warp would be good), sett close enough to be strong. One way to make a simple bag is warp wide enough to include depth of bag. Then sew up side seams, and angle sew across 2 bottom corners.

Since the meeting will last until 2 or later, packed lunches would be good.

Ask Dorothy for any library books you are interested in (see new, accurate, listings on web page).

Remember, the place of this meeting has been changed.

Aug 21, 2009 meeting

Our August 21 meeting will be at TAF at 9:30. We have lots of various items to cover, including finishing rag weaving. If you have any examples (including plastic, etc), please bring them.
We’ll also plan what we are doing for our September meeting at Tippecanoe Library, which is open to the public.

In September, we’ll bring our looms, and with a “green” theme, we have many possibilities. At this August meeting, bring your idea for what you will be doing at the September public meeting.

Call Dorothy for any library books you want, and, of course, show and tell are the best.

July 17, 2009, 9:30am at TAF

Recycling seems to have finally been given some recognition nation wide, so we are going to be talking about weaving with rags. We’ll start with how to get rags, what works best, various types of rags, sett, uses, etc. Also we’ll see several ways to cut the cloth, and how to finish the ends. Please bring any examples of rag weaving you have. This is one of the most inexpensive types of weaving!
Of course, our favorite, show and tell. Remember library books.

June 19, 2009 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

Our June meeting will be learning a little about leno lace. This is done on a loom, with some pick-up. Bring any examples of leno or other lace that you have.
As usual, bring your show and tell, sometimes the very best part of the meeting. Let me know which library books you want brought. To see the lists, click on library on the left. Also, please remember to bring back the books you have finished with.

May 15, 2009 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

At our meeting this month, Ryoko will teach and show weft-faced weaving. This kind of weaving can be used for small pictures or designs. Be prepared to learn something fun!
As always, bring your show and tell; show what you have been working on. Some things work well, others don’t. This gives us all a chance to learn more.
Are there any library books you would like brought to the meeting?

April 17, 2009 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

We have several good sample books in our library with actual samples of weaving and of yarns. We will discuss them, and try a burn test on any unknown yarns you bring. Also, this is the time to ask about yarns (or anything) that you have been wondering about.

Show and tell, as usual, is an important part of our meetings. Be sure to ask Dorothy for any library books that will help you with your next project. Just click on “Library” along the side, to get the list. Also, be sure to try our “Interesting Links!” to see what is available.

Any new weavers are always welcome. Spread the word to anyone who might be interested.

March 20, 2009 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

Our next meeting will be interesting. Jessica has been learning more about double weave and double weave pick up, and will tell us some of what she has learned:

Weave Structures:  Various uses of Double Weave
Double weave is a weave structure where two layers of cloth are woven simultaneously.  The layers can be completely separate, joined at one side, or joined at both sides to form a tube.  Extensions of these basic techniques leads to bias tape, overshot-like patterns, and pieces twice as wide as your loom.  The sample loom will be warped and ready for you to try your hand at these basic techniques, plus double weave pick-up.  Examples of other double weave techniques will be displayed.
-Jessica

Bring any items you have that are double weave to show.

As always, bring your show and tell, and let Dorothy know which library books you would like.

February 20th, 2009 meeting at TAF, at 9:30 am

Assuming that winter will continue to give us a break, we will have our meeting on February 20. It will be what we had scheduled for January (that we had to cancel because of the weather), but now we will have 3 months of weaving for show and tell! Please label items with info about the weaving. And which library books would you like me to bring?

January 16, 2009 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

Happy 2009 to all. Our first meeting will be on January 16.

This will be show and tell of all the things you have made since November. If you’ve been too busy for weaving during the holidays, please bring something you have woven in the past. It helps if you have info written out, such as yarn type (maybe a sample), pattern, sett, etc.

Let Dorothy know which library books you want brought to the meeting.

November 21, 2008 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

Our last meeting of the year is November 21. To make it a little special, we voted to have lunch together, in our meeting room, after the meeting. Bring what you can for a pitch-in meal, but if you don’t have time, stay and eat anyway. Ryoko assures us there will be plenty! Ryoko is bringing paper items, etc.

This is also our towel exchange (or pot holders, or....). Bring 2 and get 2. Please mark your towels with weaving info and your name. We’ll each have a chance to show the items before the exchange.

Also, be thinking of questions you have to ask others. Between all of us, we have a lot of info. Write down a list of things you would like help on. Of course there are always some questions that can’t be answered! Also bring a list of topics you would like to learn more about next year.

There will be no spinning meetings until January, because of the holidays.

Write Dorothy with any requests you have for library books. Please check for library material you may still have. And bring other show and tell.

October 17, 2008 meeting at TAF

Our October meeting, at 9:30am at TAF, will give us a chance to talk about the successful Feast.

We will also see samples made from the book Weft-faced Pattern Weaves, by Hoskins. These can be used to weave figures.

Don’t forget show and tell. Let Dorothy know of any of the library books you would like brought. If you want to participate in the towels, pot holder, etc. exchange next month, it’s time to get started.

Spinners will be at Dorothy’s on October 28, at 1:30pm.

September 19, 2008 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

With the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon coming up this month (September 27 and 28), we’ll discuss a very short history of Ft. Ouiatenon, the Feast, and our role in it.

We hope to have lots of show and tell, including Swedish Weavings that we’ve been finishing, and our Summer and Winter items. (If you brought yours in August, please bring it again, as more are finished.)

Spinning will be September 30, at Jessica’s, 9:30 to 11:00am. If you need directions, write her for a Google map.

Remember, we’ll have an exchange of 3 towels, pot holders, whatever, in November.

There is a new Weavezine out (www.weavezine.com). It looks like it has lots of great articles.

Be sure to ask Dorothy for any library books, or types of books, you would like to have. (Or... go see the library for yourself at Dorothy’s.)

Spinning group

Our spinning group has changed time. We’ll be meeting at 9:30am on the last Tuesday of each month, starting August 26, at Dorothy’s. Will we have some new spinners? Also, the link to the library is temporarily down (thanks to Comcast), so if you want any books, please feel free to come to my house and look through the library.

August 15, 2008 meeting at TAF

Our show and tell this month will concentrate on our very successful workshop in July. Bring samples, ideas, and questions about summer and winter weave, or anything else. We’re also looking forward to seeing some more Swedish tapestry.
Take time to look at the list of the library (home page), and let Dorothy know which books you would like brought.
We’ll see you at 9:30 on August 15!

July 18, 2008 meeting and workshop

This month’s meeting will be only from 9:30am till 10:45am at TAF. Bring your show and tell. Starting at 11:00 we’ll have the workshop with Linda Adamson teaching us the Summer and Winter weave, along with profile drafts and block designs. Please arrive early enough to have your warped looms set up before 9:30, so the workshop can start on time. Also bring a sack lunch. Let Dorothy know if you want library books brought to the meeting.
Spinners will be on July 29, 1:30, at Dorothy’s house.

June 20,2008 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

In addition to show and tell, we’ll be looking forward to seeing the progress made on the Swedish decorative weaving projects. Bring your looms to explain the process to the rest of us.
We’ll also talk about the July Summer and Winter workshop. We’ll be collecting the fee for the workshop, $15 for members, $20 for non-members. You will get a draft for warping your loom. You will need 2 contrasting colors of mercerized cotton, one 5/2, and one 3/2. The looms are to be warped before the workshop. Remember our July meeting will be over before 11:00am, for the workshop to be from 11:00 till 4:00pm.
If there are any books you want at this meeting, let Dorothy know. Don’t forget the newly designed library is available for perusal by members. The spinners will meet at Dorothy’s on June 24 at 1:30pm.

May 16, 2008 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

At this meeting we'll give everyone a chance to show results of recent workshops. Those who are taking Bea's Swedish decorative weaving workshop, please bring your project, no matter how far along you are. Also, those who warped and wove on the inkle loom from last month's workshop with Brian, please bring your project. Of course, we'll have show and tell of other weaving, too. Let Dorothy know which library books you would like brought. Also, spinners will be May 27, 1:30, at Dorothy's house.
To plan ahead, our July meeting will be shortened, followed by a workshop on summer and winter weave. Linda Adamson of Tabby Tree Weaver, will lead it.

April 18, 2008 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

The April meeting will be Brian teaching how to warp and tension
an inkle loom.  If you own one, you can bring it along with 3
different colors of yarn.  You must have around 20 string heddles
already made. (If you need help making heddles, email Brian.)  Also,
bring your show and tell.  We'll also take a trip upstairs to the
Nexus exhibit. (See pictures at right.) Let Dorothy know any library books you would like brought. Spinners will meet April 29 at Dorothy's house at 1:30pm.

Decorative weaving workshop April 8

The first meeting for Bea's decorative weaving (a Swedish type of tapestry) workshop will be held on April 8. If you are not on the list and are interested, call Jan.

March 21, 2008 meeting 9:30am at TAF

Assuming all the bad weather is over, we will have our March meeting on the 21. Sue H will show us how the triangle loom works. She has made several very beautiful shawls on hers. Be sure to remember your show and tell. Let Dorothy know if there are any library books you specifically want at the meeting (we're cutting down on the number brought to save backs).
Spinners will be on March 25 at Dorothy's at 1:30. All are welcome.

February 15, 2008 at TAF at 9:30am

Back at our normal meeting room in TAF, we will be hearing more from Ryoko about our upcoming exhibit upstairs in TAF in March and April. Then warping a loom will be discussed with demonstrations of 2 methods. Be sure to bring your show and tell! Let Dorothy know if there are any library books you wish to have. Spinners will meet on the 26th at Dorothy's.

January 18. 2008 meeting

Happy new year to all. We're going to start the new year with a visit to a professional weaver, Lilly Marsh, who has graciously agreed to show us her studio, for our January meeting. She has a wonderful loom that will be new for most of us. Lilly is the current president of Artists' Own, the co-op artists' store in downtown Lafayette. After seeing her studio, we will still have a regular meeting there, with show and tell, so be sure to bring what you have been working on.
We will meet at 9:30am at Lilly's house, 328 Laurel Drive,WL (off Happy Hollow, top of the hill). Go around the back of her house for a direct entrance to her studio. If you need help with directions, look on Google maps or call Dorothy.
No library this time, so if you want a particular book, let Dorothy know. Also, spinners will meet on January 29 at Dorothy's house, at 1:30pm.

November 16, 2007 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

At this last meeting of 2007 (we do not meet in December), we'll have our towel exchange. If you wish to participate, bring 2 towels you have woven, any size, any pattern. (Please put info about the weave on the towel.) Then, after show and tell (again, remember to write out the weave info), Jane will demonstrate winding a warp, to help our new weavers get started. This may last longer than noon, for those who wish to stay. If there are any special books you want from our library (see lists on this web site), let Dorothy know. Spinners will meet at Dorothy's on Tuesday, November 27, for all spinners and wanna-be spinners.

October 19, 2007 meeting at TAF at 9:30am

The Feast of the Hunter's Moon is coming up October 13 and 14, and it looks like we'll have good weather this year! Our meeting will be only a few days after, so we can share tales of the Feast.
Be sure to bring your show and tell; we hope to have lots.
If anyone wants a copy of her picture from the Sept. meeting, let Dorothy know. Also, if there are any library books you want brought to the meeting, let her know.
Annual dues ($10) to support the guild are due. (If you can't make the meeting, be sure to mail yours to Jan.)
Spinners will be meeting at Dorothy's on October 30 at 1:30pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all!

September 21, 2007 meeting, at TAF at 9:30am

After show and tell of all the weaving we have been working on, Jan will lead us in a tour of past Feast weaving projects. We'll also see this year's loom, warped by Jessica, that we will be weaving on, on October 13 and 14 (The Feast of the Hunter's Moon at Ft. Ouitenon). Be sure to let Dorothy know of any books you want to borrow, so she can bring them to the meeting. Spinners will be meeting at Dorothy's on September 25 at 1:30.

The WWW Library is now on-line

Joan & Jan have worked hard to give all the members a chance to have a particular book, magazine, or pamphlet brought to the next meeting. To make your selection easier, the list is accessible from the home page by author, by title, and even by topic.
Just e-mail Dorothy with your choices, and she will bring them to the next meeting for check out.

August 17 Meeting at TAF at 9:30am

Our new planning committee (Jessica, Ryoko, and Jan) has been working hard on new ideas. This month Joan wil give us a taste of the Midwest Weavers Conference she attended in June, with lots of pictures. She took a 3 day workshop on double weave, and has lots of enthusiasm to share.

July 2007 Meeting

On July 20, 9:30am at TAF, we'll be continuing with the topics we didn't get to in June. (But there will be no lunch.) Bring your show and tell, and any questions you have. Also, we'll have a spinning meeting at Dorothy's on July 31, around 1:30pm. Any new spinners?

June 2007 Meeting

This meeting, June 15 at TAF, will be a little different. First we will talk a little about the guild - history, memories, etc. We will also be planning any costumes needed, and distributing assignments, for the Feast on October 13 and 14.

We also will be selling each other any excess tools or yarns. Now is the time to go through your stash and make room for more. We will have a demonstration of how to make a mob cap for the Feast, and how to tie a string repair heddle. If all goes well, we'll finally be exchanging our lace samples (for those who are participating, but of course all get to see!). Then, sometime before noon, we'll start a pitch-in lunch. Bring something to share, and your own plate, cup, and utensils.

In addition, we'll be reinstating our spinning sub-group. Several of us used to meet regularly and had a great time. For now, we'll try the last Tuesday of the month, from 1:30 to 3:30 or so, at Dorothy's house. Any of you who want to come are welcome. Also, anyone who would like to learn to spin is welcome. This first one will be Tuesday, May 29.

May 2007 Meeting

On Friday, May 18, 9:30am at TAF, we'll continue our discussion on drafting. Bring any hard-to-understand drafts you may have. Also bring any computer program you may have for drafting. And, of course, show and tell. Dorothy will bring a snack. Be thinking about any items you may want to sell at the June meeting.

Zapotec weavers at Purdue

Pictures from members meeting Eric and Janet Chavez are now up. Click on the sidebar.

April 2007 Meeting

The way weavers write down instructions for weaving an item is called drafting. On Friday, April 20, 9:30am till noon, we'll be discussing how to read a draft, writing your own for record keeping, and using computer programs for drafting. Joan will bring the snacks. Also, remember your show and tell.
In June we will be having a "studio cleaning sale" for any tools or yarn you would like to sell. Start thinking about it now.
The Fiber Event will be April 13 and 14, just north of Greencastle. They have classes and 3 large buildings of vendors. See www.thefiberevent.com for more information.
Midwest Weavers Conference is June 20-23. Contact Jan if you're interested in going.
Be sure to check out Jessica's blog (listed in our Interesting Links). Good job Jessica.

March 2007 Meeting

Since we had to cancel our February meeting because of the weather, our March meeting will be the same subject, etc. See the February meeting below. We should have plenty of show and tell with so much time between meetings! Please bring several examples of items using more than one color in the warp. The meeting will be at TAF on March 16, at 9:30am till noon.

Cancellation of February meeting

Due to our record breaking snow, and the extreme cold, we're canceling the February meeting. The March meeting will be the same topic.

February 2007 Meeting

One of the interesting things about weaving is the way color can be used for visual interest, even in non-pattern weaves. If more than one color is in the warp, there are several different ways of winding and warping the yarn. Please bring lots of examples of woven items that have more than one color in the warp, and we'll discuss the best methods for setting up each type.
The meeting will be on Friday, February 16, at 9:30am at TAF. Phyllis will be bringing snack.
Don't forget to bring show and tell... in addition to color warping examples.

January 2007 Meeting

A new year is here for us to try the weaving projects that have been in our heads for too long!

We'll start with the January 19th meeting bringing, showing, and comparing inkle looms. Bring any inkle loom(s) you have plus items that have been woven on one.

Mildred will give the book report of her choice. And don't forget show and tell -either projects or projects-to-be (inspired by new Handwoven?).

November Meeting

Our next meeting is on November 17, from 9:30am till noon, at TAF. At our demonstration at the Art Museum and at the Feast, Ryoko has shown how to do kumihimo braid on a card, and pretzel weaving. Since not everyone got to see her demonstrations, she will be teaching us these 2 fun things at our next meeting. Bring any thrums you have that are at least 24 inches long. Jessica will be giving a book review. Be sure to bring show and tell also. We do not meet in December, so this will be the last meeting until January. Notice the new Links section in the upper left.

Feast of the Hunters' Moon 2006

The Feast was a big success this year. Good weather really helps. For some pictures of our booth at this year's Feast, click on the category in the upper left.

October meeting

Everything is coming together well for our booth at the Feast of the Hunters' Moon, October 7 and 8, our biggest outreach event of the year. And the weather looks good!
Our regular meeting will be Friday, October 20, 9:30am till around noon, at TAF in Lafayette. The topic is rep weave (warp-faced weave). Bring any examples you have of rep. We will also be looking at some samples inspired by the new book, Rep Weave and Beyond, by Joanne Tallarovic. In addition to warp-faced weaves, be sure to bring show and tell. We'll also talk about the Feast.

September Meeting

Jane will be presenting "Finishing Touches for Handwoven Clothing" to the guild at our September 15 meeting, at TAF. Bring examples that you have, to add to the discussion. As always, bring show-and-tell. We will also finish planning for our booth at the Feast of the Hunters' Moon, which is October 7 & 8.

August Meeting

Our August meeting will be back at our regular place - Tippecanoe Arts Federation, on August 18 at 9:30 am. Our last 3 meetings have all been "on the go" (Purdue, Delphi, and Art Museum - click on lists of pictures at the top left). We should have an interesting meeting this time talking about these 3 trips plus hearing from those who went to Convergence. We also will have lots of show-and-tell from over the summer.

July Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, July 22, instead of our usual Friday meeting. The meeting will be a "weave-in" for the public to learn about weaving. It will be held in the Art Museum, main floor, in conjuction with our exhibit which is upstairs. Each weaver will be demonstrating a different part of the process, or a different kind of loom. At the same time, the Ouiatenon Spinners will be demonstrating - so we can see the complete process of making cloth.

We will be open to the public from 1:00 until 3:00pm. Be sure to invite your friends, especially those who wonder what this strange thing is that you use to make cloth.

Art Center Exhibit

Many thanks to Lucinda for the REALLY successful exhibit she put together at the Art Center, and to Susan who made all the arrangements to use the three-treadle loom ...and even provided the lunch... at the Delphi Canal Interpretive center!

There are pics from both events in the sidebar to the left.
